With her new mask around her face, she continued on the journey to retrieve Sister Ursulla’s brother’s body.

Chapter 12

6 Days 6 hours until the apocalypse

Redorok Bar, Tholos, 6:17 pm

“One more?” Travis asked, knowing very well that it might be his last drink for the night. It was either that or staying in the bar and passing out.

Emily bought another glass of whiskey to the table.

“Is this to heal yourself from yesterday’s defeat?” she said, trying to tease him. Travis tried to hold in his pain, his sadness and frustration.

He looked up, searching for words to say.

“Mr. Fincher told me about it earlier today. Why did you fall asleep and snore? Reaper Jones doesn’t like anyone asleep.”

“I was mildly drunk and tired. It can happen to anyone,” Travis said, trying to be casual about it.

“Sure,” Emily said, and laughed. Travis forced a smile, even though the thought of Rocket plagued him. Travis needed to distract himself and alcohol wasn’t helping. Instead of numbing the pain, all it did was remind him of Rocket.

“Mr. Fincher told me about Reaper Jones and how Dr. Howard genetically modified his genes to turn him into something that can’t be killed. Do you think I would ever stand a chance against such a monster?”

“Dr. Howard? You mean Dr. Heinlem’s brother?”

“Yes.”

“I thought he only modified pets and animals. This is new information. Still, you gave it your best right?”

“Yeah,” Travis said, thinking about Dr. Howard and his obsession with modifying pets. Could it be him or his men that took away Rocket?

“Emily,” Travis said, looking into her eyes. “Do you remember what yesterday was supposed to be like? For us?”

“I know, Travis. Wendy will be back at work tomorrow. So, I’ll be free tomorrow for our first official date if you can come by six,” Emily said and smiled.

“I’ll be here. It’s a date then,” Travis said and raised his glass.

“Almost every day is a date for us, Travis. You’re always here,” she said, touching Travis’ arm. Travis held on to her arm lightly.

“Then stay. Pretend I’m the only customer tonight.”

“I would love to do that, but then I’d be jobless tomorrow. So, on our official first date, would you prefer going out with unemployed Emily or Emily the bartender?”

“If I say unemployed Emily, would you stay?” Travis said and winked.

Emily laughed and left his hand on the counter. “Nice try, mister!” she said, tapping her forehead. Then she went back to the other side, and the world was bad again.

He finished his drink watching everyone else in the Bar, going about their lives, laughing and singing along. Some talked about Ian Floyd’s next concert. Many talked about the crack in the Tholos’ dome. Travis thought about Rocket and whether he was still okay. He pulled down his screen and saw that the quest was still there. He could still be able to accept it. Why would someone break into his house and take his dog?

Emily came back with another glass.

“Hey, my shift gets over in an hour.
